KART Vanpools
Sponsored by the Kings County Area Public Transit Agency, the KART vanpool program can provide you and your passengers with reliable transportation to and from work. All at a lower cost than you’re probably paying now. All to keep you and our roadways as safe as possible. For program specifics, please click on any of the questions below:
How do I become a KART vanpool driver?
KART Vanpool drivers must have a Class C license, pass a required physical and provide a DMV printout showing proof of a clean driving record. If you meet those qualifications and would like to volunteer to drive a KART vanpool, call the Kings County Area Public Transit Agency at 866-655-5444.
How does KART ensure safety?
All KART 8 and 15-passenger vans are equipped with a Global Positioning System, so the driver can locate help should an emergency arise. The vans also carry first aid kits, fire extinguishers and roadside safety items. And for maximum peace of mind, every van in the program is fully covered by a $2 million insurance policy.
Do I get paid for driving a KART vanpool?
No, KART drivers receive no pay. They are volunteers who drive their passengers and enjoy the benefits of a safe, affordable, reliable commute to work.
What is the cost to drivers and riders?
The cost is based on the number of days and distance traveled. The cost is divided among the passengers and paid on a monthly basis. The driver collects the payments and forwards them to the Agency. The payments cover the Agency’s cost of maintaining and insuring the vans, as well as the cost of replacing them when they wear out. Try our Commute Cost Calculator to find out how much you can save.
Who provides Maintenance for the Vans?
All maintenance is provided by KART. Loaner vans are provided when vans are being services or repaired. Loaner vans are picked up and dropped off at a location convenient to the vanpool driver.
Who provides fuel for the Vans?
A fuel card is provided that is good at most service station. The bill for all fuel purchased is sent to and paid for by KART.
